This is Part 1 of a 4-Part interview with Perry Yung, a Chinese-American actor and shakuhachi flute luthier from Oakland, California. Perry has been based out of New York City for a few decades, where he raised his two boys with his dance professor wife. He recently played the main role of Father Jun in Bruce Lee’s “Warrior” series for Cinemax, which moved to HBOMax at the beginning of 2021.

I did it! I landed a great interview with an awesome subject who had amazing stories to tell. Here’s Part 1 of my 4-Part interview with actor and shakuhachi flute luthier, Perry Yung, everyone’s badass Asian dad.
Perry also co-starred in the upcoming feature film, “Boogie,” set in New York City Chinatown, which will be released (most likely to streaming, due to Covid) on March 5th, 2021.
I hope you enjoy Part 1 where we discussed his “Boogie” co-star, Taylor Takahashi, being a 4th-generation Japanese Oakland native. What’s happening to the only two Japantowns left in the United States during Covid, the history of Tanforan Mall as a Japanese internment camp, the sudden death from Covid of Perry’s close friend and longtime Chinese-American activist and photographer, Corky Lee, and just how big those Justin Lin-produced (“Fast and the Furious”) sets were in South Africa, for Bruce and Shannon Lee’s “Warrior” series, for Cinemax, now available on HBO Max and to buy or rent on Amazon Prime Video.
I have one degree of separation from Ip Man, Bruce Lee’s Sifu, in Wing Chun Kung Fu and I am from and remain in San Francisco, so any tv shows set in San Francisco Chinatown are of particular interest to me.
You can watch “Warrior” with an HBOMax subscription or rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video.
