Racism is not: intentional, individual, or conscious. “White” fragility is racial bullying. I learned about this educator today and her work is so important and necessary that I wanted to share it with you. Her name is Robin DiAngelo and she is currently a writer & consultant on racism. She has a bestselling book & viral video out about how to explain racism to “white” people that I wish everyone in the US would read or watch or both.
I get so frustrated trying to explain racism to people who refuse to acknowledge it. I get (justifiably) angry at “white” people who would rather call me a racist (showing that they don’t even know what the word means) than acknowledge their own racial biases, no matter how blatant they are about them. Even data scientists will willfully delude themselves about their own numbers on this particular topic.
After having been frustrated and let-down by so many seemingly-radical, but ultimately fake “white” feminists, this lady is a breath of fresh air. Here is a USA, privileged, educated lady who gets it and can articulate and explain it to her fellow “white” people in a way that doesn’t make them feel attacked or react in a self-deluding, reflexively defensive way. I often think, “It’s not my job to explain racism to ‘white’ people. I don’t have the patience or energy for this bullshit.” Well, here is a “white” lady who has made it her job and is happy to take their money to teach them how to not be racist. If you still have problems empathizing with People-Of-Color or understanding why we’re so rationally angry, you should read this book or watch her videos. If you get frustrated explaining racism to “white” people, her ideas might help, too.
